Pentadesma: West Africa’s Hidden Butter Tree

Native to the forests of West Africa, Pentadesma butyracea is a rare butter traditionally used for its nourishing and soothing properties.

In regions of Benin and Togo, where the tree grows naturally, Pentadesma butter has long been used as an alternative to shea butter in certain local traditions, particularly for skin and hair care rituals.

Rich and naturally protective, the butter was historically appreciated for its ability to comfort dry or sensitized skin, especially after prolonged exposure to heat and environmental stress.

Its naturally occurring phytosterols, including stigmasterol, are also associated with soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, contributing to the butter’s long-standing traditional use.

At Enudium, we were drawn to Pentadesma not only for its texture and skin affinity, but also for the story it carries — one rooted in resilience, regional knowledge, and generations of botanical use.
